‘Helen Joseph saved my life’

AUCKLAND PARK - Not all experiences at the local hospital are bad.

Tanie Willie Steyn does not buy into the hype that Helen Joseph Hospital is all bad. In fact, she knows this it is not true because, according to the pensioner, if it was not for the caring doctor and nurses who looked after her, she would not be alive today.

On 19 March, Steyn had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital by her pastor. While being attended to in emergency she had a second heart attack. Again, she was stabilised and admitted to the special care unit where she spent one week before being discharged home.

“Usually you are afraid to go to Helen Joseph because people say that you won’t come back, but I’m still here.”

Tanie Steyn said that she felt very well cared for as the doctor and sisters constantly checked on her to make sure she was alright.

“There is good care at Helen Joseph Hospital and I really appreciate that they were so caring of me. People out there have it wrong, I was admitted for a week and sent back home. I didn’t die.”
