Northcliff High’s gamers receive provincial colours
NORTHCLIFF- Northcliff High School received provincial colours Mind Sports South Africa's 31st Annual MWEB Gauteng Provincial Championships held in Pretoria.
Computer gamers now have their own sporting code: eSports.
Northcliff High School pupils proved to be a gaming force to be reckoned with at the 31st annual MWEB Gauteng Provincial Championships, recently.
The Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) hosted the competition at Hoër Tegniese Skool Tuine in Pretoria. The organisation is responsible for the good governance and promotion of board games, eSports and historical figure games.
Northcliff High School participated in five of the nine games offered and managed to scoop up medals in all five.
In addition, some contestants were awarded provincial colours for their efforts.
“Northcliff High School has always prided itself on, not just being one of the best schools in eSports, but has also competed fairly and with great sportsmanship, among the top schools in the country,” said MSSA’s general secretary Colin Webster.
Webster said he was pleased with the overall turnout of the events.
“The venue was excellent and a record number of gamers turned out for the championships. Nine member clubs from three provinces contested the championships.”
Northcliff High School’s general level of competitiveness has produced two pupils who went on to represent South Africa on the international stage.
Robert Botha served in the Protea Team in 2011, 2012 and 2013 while Ian Pillay represented South Africa in the Protea Team in 2011.
However, the Gauteng championships were all about the new batch of rising stars from the school.
The results were:
- Call of Duty: Ghosts – 1st and 2nd
- CounterStrike GO – 2nd
- Dota 2 – 2nd High School division
- FIFA ’14 – 1st and 2nd

Players who earned provincial colours were:

“The success of the club is largely due to the continued efforts of educator-in-charge, Noelene du Toit. We all look forward to seeing just how well the school does for the rest of the year,” Webster concluded.
