German beer fest from an African perspective

JOBURG - Nozuko and Zukiswa Bottoman share their views of the German beer fest held in Milpark.

Beer and festival lovers enjoyed the German beer festival held in Milpark recently.

The annual event was attended by hundreds of families, Germans and other cultures alike.

We caught up with twins Nozuko and Zukiswa Bottoman who shared their experience with Northcliff Melville Times.

“This is one of the greatest events we love and enjoy attending it each year,” said the twins at the Deutsche Internationale Schule where the event is hosted each year.

Subsequent to seeing the first German beer festival advertisement online, Nozuko jumped at the opportunity to attend. The twins have a number of German and other European friends and wanted to experience their culture.

The German festivals are different to the South African ones, according to Nozuko.

“The other beer festivals I have attended don’t have as much culture and history as the school and the beers from this particular festival,” Nozuko said.

The Germans have different food such as Prezel, Sauerkraut, Eisbein, Bratwurst that the two both enjoyed.

“I also enjoyed seeing their traditional outfits such as Dirndl for women and Lederhosen for men,” Zukiswa commented.

Nozuko said what she loves most about the festival is the beer.

“Well, the environment, music, food and culture combined to make quite a wonderful experience,” she said.

When asked if they will attend other German festivals to come, Nozuko responded with a “H*ll yes”.

Zukiswa disliked that at this year’s event not enough emphasis was on the German culture, except food and beer.

“A few people were wearing Lederhosen, which is male traditional wear,” Zukiswa commented.

Nozuko on the other hand, complained about the insufficient parking space at the venue.

Zukiswa concluded by saying that all the Germans she knows are friendly, fun people to be around.
