Auckland Park Preparatory School stages modern twist on the classic Wizard of Oz
From dazzling performances to an original soundtrack, DotDot in OzTok showcased the talent of APPS learners while delivering a timely message about friendship beyond the screen.
Auckland Park Preparatory School’s (APPS) senior play recently captivated audiences with an imaginative and thought provoking production of DotDot in OzTok, a contemporary reimagining of The Wizard of Oz that explored the impact of technology and social media on human connection.
The production showcased the remarkable talent, creativity, and teamwork of girls from grades 4 to 7, with every performer and backstage crew member contributing to an unforgettable theatrical experience. While the entire cast played an important role, it was the school’s Grade 7s who delivered exceptional performances as they took centre stage in their final senior production at APPS.

Beyond its entertainment value, DotDot in OzTok delivered a timely and powerful message for today’s digital generation: That no amount of online popularity can replace the value of genuine human connection. At its heart, the production reminded audiences that one true, loyal friend is worth far more than 10 000 likes, followers, or virtual approval.

“Theatre gives young people the confidence to discover their own voice,” said Stanimir Stoykov, APPS drama teacher and director of the production. “Throughout this production, our girls showed confidence and courage. DotDot in OzTok challenged them to think differently, while embracing every moment on stage, and I could not be prouder of what they achieved together.”

The production was the culmination of weeks of rehearsals, dedication, and collaboration between pupils, staff, and parents. Under the direction of Stoykov, the girls delivered performances filled with confidence and heart. In addition to directing the play, Stoykov produced the original soundtrack, creating a rich musical backdrop that enhanced the energy and storytelling throughout the production. The show was further elevated by the striking Grade 7 costumes, designed by Johannesburg fashion designer David Hutt, of Style Syndicate Studio, and dynamic choreography by Tyler Spilman, whose creative vision brought movement, expression, and theatrical flair to the stage.
“School productions are about so much more than putting on a great show,” said Joanne Glendinning, headmistress of Auckland Park Preparatory School. “They give our girls the chance to develop skills that simply can’t be taught from a textbook. Every rehearsal, every forgotten line, and every moment of improvisation teaches them resilience, teamwork, problem-solving, and the confidence to keep going when things don’t go to plan. Long after the final curtain falls, those are the lessons that will stay with them.”
As the curtain closed on another outstanding senior play, DotDot in OzTok left audiences inspired and entertained, while providing every girl involved with memories and life lessons that will remain with them long after the final bow.
