“I can’t pay’

WESTDENE - One month's electricity - combined with power surges that damaged her home - has cost her R167 000 in total.

Last week power surges wrecked her home. And now she has discovered that the charge for her monthly municipal bill is

R67 000.

Wilhelmina Kuhn-Steyn (known locally as Tannie Willie) doesn’t know what to do anymore.

“I can’t pay,” she said on 25 July.

“I already have to pay R100 000 to fix the wiring in my house after a cable surge fried the wires, and now there’s this as well.”

Tannie Willie has always used her electricity sparingly. “I only put on the light in whichever room I am at the moment,” she said.

“I don’t have a lot of appliances. My bill is usually around R600.”

She has no idea what could have caused the large bill, although she thinks it may have something to do with the surges affecting Westdene.

“If it is a billing error, I hope that they rectify it. If not, I don’t know what to do.”
