Pupils at Northcliff Primary School are setting the bar high in mathematics.
Horizon Educational Trust’s Schools have been hosting a mathematics competition for schools since 2000. Pupils from Grades 5 to 7 are invited to the competition and outstanding prizes are offered to the top students to encourage their interest in mathematics.
Earlier this term, pupils at Northcliff Primary took part in this battle of the brains – 23 609 primary school pupils participated in South Africa, 5 500 of whom were from Gauteng.
Northcliff Primary emerged as one of the top schools in Gauteng, with 17 pupils placing in Gauteng’s top 200. Gregory Conroy (Grade 7) came fifth overall and Khalil Hassam (also in Grade 7) took the 23rd spot.
John Folarin, Timothy Singh, Georgia Sambo, Jade Hoffman, Alexandra Lindsay, Jason Stumbles, Jodie Padayachee, Divine Azozama, Martell Moodley, Amanda Thompson, Lleyton Walljee, Caitlin Olwagen, Bilal Haffejee, Keanen Abrahams and Michael Goldschagg placed in the top 200 pupils.
“We are delighted that even our Grade 6 pupils achieved such high rankings,” Northcliff Primary principal Jeanine Kerr said.
“The vision of our school is to graduate the most sought-after pupils in Gauteng, and we are certainly on track to do that!”
Kerr said that the school’s excellent achievements are also due to her very competent and enthusiastic staff.
“Our Grade 7 mathematics teacher, Mrs Lewis, was runner-up in the Gauteng National Teacher Awards at the end of last year in the category ‘Best Mathematics Teacher’,” she said.
“She even beat high school maths teachers with her excellence in teaching.”
