Mhere laid to rest at Westpark cemetry
RAND PARK RIDGE – An emotional goodbye to Simba Mhere, as he was laid to rest.
The funeral service of Simba Mhere took place on 7 February at the Rhema Bible Church.
His family from Zimbabwe, flew in to South Africa to pay their last respects.
Shumirayi Mhere, spoke on behalf of the family, said the late Mhere brought joy into the family’s life. “He fulfilled his God given plan, I will miss you Simba may your soul rest in peace.”
Pastor Tapiwa Munonyara who spoke on behalf of family of Mhere’s mother, said “We as a family, have lost a warrior, a David of our time. A man of respect. A man who honours everyone he comes across. A man of purpose. We will miss you and we love you may your soul rest in peace.”
Songs of worship were performed by Brenda Mntambo and Lionel Peterson and the Rhema band and choir.
His friend and co-host Jonathan Boynton – Lee broke down as he expressed how he had used his last bit of strength to speak at Mhere’s memorial. “I honestly do not think I can speak again, I have lost my brother but I have gained a brotherhood with my Top Billing family and all of them are behind me. Simba’s family you are some kind of superheroes, I don’t know how you are being so strong,” siad his Top Billing co-host.
As Boynton-Lee broke down he said “I’m sorry my ‘brother’ [Mhere] I am trying to be strong for you.’’
Delivering the eulogy for her brother, Valerie Mhere said “I wasn’t going to read anything because I thought I’d speak from the heart but after seeing his body this morning, I don’t think I can get through it without reading. The one thing I admire about my brother is that he was well disciplined, he would say to me ‘V ‘ [Valerie] the reason I do things is because I want you to have things, that I was not able to have.’’
Amongst the speakers who paid tribute to Mhere were; SABC representatives Bessie Tugwana, Top Billing Executive producer Basetsana Kumalo, friend Levinia Naidoo, family friend Tshidi Malao and Ivy Munonyara read out the obituary.
Pastor Ray McCauley delivered the sermon and he mentioned that Mhere lives a legacy of respect, responsibility and sacrifice. “Simba will live forever with the lord – we will see him again.’’
