Eight units of the Linden Hills Garden complex were evacuated after strong winds tore sections of the roof from the complex in Linden on September 4.
The storm caused extensive damage to the complex, while other properties in the suburb were affected by the strong winds. Trees were also blown down, blocking roads and access points in several areas.

Despite the extent of the damage, no injuries were reported.

Tiaan Schutte, of the Linden Community Association and Linden Community Policing Forum, said several properties were affected by the strong winds, although none suffered damage as severe as the complex where sections of the roof were torn away. “It was a very strong wind. A few buildings had damage, but not as severe as the blown-off roof,” Schutte said.

He added that other properties had fascia boards blown off and chimneys damaged. “Beagle Watch, I see, had their team cleaning up and cutting trees that fell. We are grateful there were no injuries reported. Eight units had to be evacuated,” Schutte said.

Footage from the scene showed extensive damage to the complex, with sections of roofing torn away. Most of the residents from the eight evacuated units have since gone to stay with friends or family, according to information provided to the publication.

The storm also left a trail of fallen trees and branches across parts of Johannesburg, including Linden, Blairgowrie, Melville, Blackheath, Northcliff, Kensington B, Kloofendal and Roodepoort.

Beagle Watch’s environmental team responded to multiple reports across its operational area, clearing roads blocked by fallen trees and branches and working to restore safe access for motorists and residents.

Clean-up operations continued on September 5, when additional reports of fallen trees and branches blocking roads and residential driveways were received. The environmental team was again mobilised to remove hazards and restore access.

David Caseiro, area manager of Beagle Watch, praised the team’s efforts. “While many people were preparing to enjoy their weekend, our environmental team responded without hesitation to multiple reports of fallen trees and branches despite the severe weather,” Caseiro said. “Their dedication ensured roads were cleared quickly and safely. They returned again this morning to remove additional hazards and restore access for residents and motorists.”

Caseiro said the organisation was proud of the team’s professionalism and commitment to keeping communities safe.
