SCP success in January
SOPHIATOWN – The Sophiatown Community Patrol has released its January progress report.
The Sophiatown Community Patrol (SCP) recently released its progress report for January at one of their public meetings.
The report stated that, overall, it has been a very quiet month in terms of crime.
Chairperson of the SCP Dauw Steyn was thankful to the patrollers involved in January.
“I’d like to thank all the patrollers for their hard work so far. You [men and women] are the reason we live in a safer suburb,” he said
For the month of January, the SCP has made two arrests, conducted 31 searches, and seven crimes were reported to the patrol.
The patrol also reported an increase of street crimes and smash-and-grab incidents occurring around Millar Street and Main Road.
The Sophiatown Centre (where Shoprite is located) has also recently played host to a number of ATM robberies.
Ettiene Greyling was named January’s patroller of the month. The patrol wished him a huge congratulations for this achievement.
Steyn encouraged residents who are not aware of the patrol to become involved and join the patrols.
“Getting involved in these patrols is really making a difference in our beautiful community. We can use every person who wants to join.”
The SCP had recently been acknowledged by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety for making a difference in the area’s crime levels.
“A huge ‘A’ to all the patrollers for doing an extraordinary job at cutting crime in our area. Representatives from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety have acknowledged the role you play and has noted that a difference can definitely be seen in crime levels in our suburb,” Steyn concluded.
