Water solutions for the community
AUCKLAND PARK – JoJo Tanks recently hosted a demonstration on rainwater harvesting at Jane Griffith's delicious garden.
Media representatives and community members recently gathered at ‘Jane’s Delicious Garden’ in Auckland Park for an insightful demonstration on rain- and grey-water harvesting.
The event was hosted by JoJo Tanks South Africa who demonstrated the benefits of using a rain- and grey-harvesting systems at home.
Eco-urbanite and author of Jane’s Delicious Garden, Jane Griffith, graciously hosted guests and Jojo Tank representatives at her home. Griffith provided a tour of the grounds and explained how she implemented a sustainable rain-grey-water system to accommodate the growth of her garden. “Water conservation comes to me as second nature. I tried to make my garden a very water-wise one. Every single attempt I’ve made in the garden is in an effort to try and reduce my carbon footprint. Jojo Tanks has offered me an elegant solution on how to successfully harsness the benefits of rain-grey-water harvesting in my own garden,” she said.
Managing director of JoJo Tanks, Rod Cairns was very thankful for the opportunity to demonstrate how effective rain- and grey-water harvesting can be, “Jojo Tanks South Africa is very proud to be able to promote sustainable living practices. The event today was to celebrate Jane Griffith’s impressive rainwater harvesting system in her impressive garden and home,” he said.
Cairns pointed out that people utilising water-harvesting systems, have to be fully aware of what the uses of the stored water should be for. “Jojo Tanks South Africa does not advocate the usage of the rain water as a form of drinkable water – unless the water has been treated through an appropriate purifying filter system first. The ideal usage of the stored rainwater should ideally be to provide an active water supply for gardening, washing or flushing purposes.”
Cairns explained that water supply usage is becoming more and more dire in South Africa and that individual homeowners should take matters into their own hands and try to create sustainable water-supply solutions. He also added that architects need to be made aware of these harvesting systems when designing homes in the future. ” We have tried to remind the general public and professional architects on how water-harvesting systems can benefit homes and surrounding gardens – they need to be mindful of how they lay out their water-filtration systems in their designs,” he said.
The general benefits of utilising a rain-grey-water-harvesting system according to Jojo Tanks:
– Harvesting systems meet up to 86 per cent of your average household’s water needs.
– It reduces the reliance on municipal water and stored rainwater can be used during municpal water outages.
– Water harvesting systems greens your home and reduces your carbon footprint.
