Art from a different vantage point
MELVILLE – An art exhibition entitled 'Vantage' showcases the latest in South African art talent.
An art exhibition was hosted at Upstairs@bamboo in Melville on 9 May. Carol Lee, curator at the Carol Lee Fine Art Gallery Carol Lee proudly assembled a group of South African artists whose combined perspectives have merged to form the exhibition she entitled, Vantage.
Lee explained that the exhibition showcased the very best of local talent through the unique perspective of the artists as well as through the interpretation of the viewers. “A host of my artists have interpreted the theme of Vantage as both a way of seeing and a way of thinking. In other words, both viewpoint and point of view. The closely observed fragments are in themselves studies of small perspectives, but merged together, present a broader view,” she said.
Lee also pointed out that the artists have made use of various mediums to interpret the theme. One of the artists, Bruce Backhouse, shared his thoughts surrounding the theme of the exhibition. “Vantage allows the artist a broad canvas on which to depict various perspectives and points of view. The South African landscape, both rural and urban, happen to be my ongoing theme. And watercolours, for example, allow the flexibility to be able to paint in plain air, and painting what my eye actually sees,” he said.
The exhibition is scheduled from 9 to 17 May, 10am to 3pm.
