Promises not delivered on the illegal taxi rank

FAIRLAND – Ward 98 Councillor Laurette van Zijl says she is disappointed on how the City officials have failed to deliver on their promises.

Johannesburg City officials may have failed to deliver on their promises.

In the past months, Ward 98 councillor Laurette Van Zijl has raised many concerns over the taxis stationed on the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and Wilson Street in Fairland on numerous occasions, but her cries went unheard. Taxis blocking the road

Van Zijl emphasised that taxi drivers and bus drivers should not use the road as a place to wait for passengers because it is an accident waiting to happen.

However, after numerous attempts she received a response from officials stating that they will deal with the taxi rank issues in the 2017 financial year.

Meanwhile, JRA’s Public Transport Operations Khomotso Ratlabala informed that the Department of Transport, together with the JRA went on site to investigate if provision of a lay-bys can be feasible. Ratlabala has since promised that for now, JRA could consider painting red markings at the World Wear corner and put a ‘No Stopping’ sign to alleviate the problem.

“They said that red lines would be painted but they are not, and there is nothing on this year’s budget that would help us with the taxi rank issues,” said the disappointed councillor.

“I am extremely disappointed because we are playing with people’s lives – The council has little regard for safety of people,” she said.
