NORTHCLIFF – Squash victor Jarrad Focher pounds competition wherever he goes.
Jarrad Rochér, a Matric pupil at Northcliff High School, smashes competition in his ultimate game of Squash.
After two of his friends started playing squash, Focher got the fever and began to play in Grade 6. “I was and still am very competitive, I wanted to be the best,” said Roshér. This was ultimately the beginning of his career in squash.
Quickly he became a force to be reckoned with. In Grade 7 Rochér joined his age group’s Gauteng Squash team. “It was a great feeling and I used my competitive edge to be rated in the top 10 in Gauteng.”
It then took him about nine months to become one of the top 10 players in the country at U19 level, which resulted in him receiving his South African colours in Squash. Recently he returned from competing in the international U19 Squash tournament in Malaysia and Hong Kong. During this competition he came 18th out of about 180 players from across the globe.
Squash is, however, not his only passion. “I love hockey and try to alternate between the two.” Rochér is hoping to study a career in marketing after matriculating. “I would love to continue playing sports at university level, although I think my studies should come first.” He currently practises at the Northcliff Country Club.
