WESTDENE - Stinking situation along Lewes Road.
Residents on Lewes Road along Westdene Dam have claimed their lives are being made a misery due to the stench emanating from the sewerage system’s open lids and the dam’s contaminated water.
Westdene Joburg CROW chairperson Frikkie Botes said people living close to the dam, and the road, have complained that the stench has become worse in the recent days.
He said they have for the past few years reported the matter to the Joburg Water.
“The system keeps on getting stuck, not because of the residents’ carelessness, but because of how they built the system. The circle line is not well done and we made them aware of it. This is worse because the stinking blocked sewage lifts up the sewerage lids, and all these dirty toilet papers and other disturbing waste floods our streets at times while toilet papers get stuck on residents’ home fences and gardens.”
He added that another sewerage line leads to Westdene Dam and spills sewage into the dam. “That is why the dam is so contaminated that people hate visiting the park at the Dam, it stinks.”
Botes said the reply they got from the Joburg Water recently was that they are going to wait until the storm drainage is full during rainy seasons so they can see where the problem is because without that they can’t really point where the problem starts.
“We had so many rainy seasons for the past years, but it wasn’t sorted. Now it will be even worse because the Joburg Roads Agency is busy working on the pavements. It means Joburg Water is still going to dig up the new pavements done by the Joburg Roads for them to access the lines we are complaining about. What a waste of money,” said Botes.
Joburg Water spokesperson David Sibiya [www.johannesburgwater.co.za/] said, “I have engaged our Langlaagte Depot which services Westdene. According to them if a call is logged with our call center, a team will be dispatched to attend to the problem.”
Sibiya said they were not certain when this problem was reported but will have to find reference numbers that will assist them in investigating the problem.
