MELVILLE – Melpark Primary School pupils host their Entrepreneur’s Day at school.
It was food, fun and games at Melpark Primary School in Melville at its annual Entrepreneur’s Day on 11 September. Grade 7 pupils showcased their entrepreneurial skills, setting up their tables on the soccer field and touting their goods to the younger grades who were eager to spend their money.
The Grade 7 classes were divided into teams working together to make a profit after planning the day for a month. The teams included World of Habashwe, Uptown Girls, Remix Royal, Flawless Girls, Taste Twisters, Monate Fela and Royalty Enterprise. The teams sold burgers, hot dogs, pizza,
ice-cream, cupcakes, ice lollies, meat, toffee apples, potato spirals on a stick, candy and cupcakes.
Team Monate Fela spent R580 on their business and hoped to make R1 000 in profit. Team Royalty Enterprise spent R800 on their stall and hoped to make R2 000 overall, money they want to use for their Grade 7 farewell.
Emma Mlangeni, the economic management sciences (EMS) teacher, said that the children had learned entrepreneurial skills in class and they were putting the theory into practice. “They have learned how to draw up a budget, how to deal with customers as well as how to make a profit,” Mlangeni said.
She added that subjects like EMS encouraged pupils to make a living amidst the country’s economic troubles. “Not everyone is going to go to university or college, so it’s important for the pupils to know exactly how to survive and make a living in the future,” she concluded.
