VIDEOS: UJ responds to workers protest
AUCKLAND PARK – Cleaning staff from UJ continue their protest over outsourcing and demand to be in-sourced immediately by the university.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) along with the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) have released a statement in response to the protest by workers at UJ. Workers have demanded to be in-sourced by the university.
Media liaison for UJ’s Division of Institutional Advancement Herman Esterhuizen, said that UJ and Nehawu met on 3 November to discuss a way forward on UJ’s intention to end all outsourcing arrangements.
He said in the statement that the university “briefed Nehawu on the establishment of a task team of key stakeholders to develop a plan to enable the university to in-source service staff at the very earliest opportunity, and that work has begun”.
Esterhuizen continued, “The meeting noted that in light of the urgency of the matter, the first meeting of this task team is scheduled for 6 November. Both parties agreed that this work is extremely important, and that this must be accelerated and be completed by end-February.” Esterhuizen added that Nehawu and UJ had committed themselves to the work agenda, and agreed that in-sourcing should improve the standard of living of the workers.
Esterhuizen pointed out that classes at the university were continuing despite the protest.
