Wigs for patients in need

AUCKLAND PARK – Chemotherapy and hair loss made easier, thanks to wig donations.

On 26 November Logan Dashwood and Kate Pattrick from Mike and Liz Hairpieces handed out wigs to patients at the Helen Joseph’s breast cancer centre. These 22 wigs were a mixture of new wigs from the salon as well as wigs donated from recovered cancer patients.

According to Dashwood, Mike and Liz Hairpieces has an amazing circle of clients, many whom have been with them since the business opened in Linden, 48 years ago. These clients continuously entrust them with previously-used wigs. The ladies that received the wigs do not have the means to buy their own wigs, when they lose their hair, due to undergoing chemotherapy. These wigs were handed out as a part of the Loving Locks programme by Mike and Liz. “The role of wigs during cancer treatment is to take away the anxiety of facing the world with a drastically changed appearance,” said Dashwood.

Louise Turner, director of Bosom Buddies at the breast cancer centre, said that the organisation strives to lend emotional support to women diagnosed with cancer. “We want to contribute back to the public who do not have access to the necessary funds.” Prof Carol Ann Benn from the hospital, thanked the staff from Mike and Liz for their donation. “For some of these cancer patients its harder to lose their hair than their breasts. It takes a lot of bravery and hardship to walk around with no hair” said Benn.

Do donate a wig to Mike and Liz hairpieces’ Loving Locks programme, phone 011 782 3907.
