Choir travels to UK in honour of Nelson Mandela

WESTDENE– Sparrow Combined School choir shines at different schools and churches in the United Kingdom

The Sparrow Combined School choir travelled to the United Kingdom last year November as part of The Sparrow School Foundation where every three years, groups of pupils are invited who are talented in an activity at school.

The pupils got the opportunity to perform at different schools and churches over a two-week period . They were divided into different groups of two to three to families who hosted their stay while they were in the United Kingdom.

Kamahleo Lephallo, who is a tenor in the choir, said at the schools he performed at he was impressed with the kind of facilities the schools had that he had never seen before as opposed to the ones he is used to.

The Sparrow Combined School choir has 12 members and they enjoyed singing the gospel songs which have dance moves incorporated in their performances.

Karabo Khupe said it was her first time travelling out of the country and it was an unforgettable experience. “We got to also tour around the United Kingdom

in-between our performances. We got to see different cities, experience the culture and meet the people who were very friendly. London was absolutely beautiful,” Khupe said.

Founder of Sparrow Schools Jackie Gallagher said that the entire trip was sponsored by the National Lottery South Africa and without them, their overseas trip would not have been possible. The first city the choir travelled to was London, Watford, Banbury then back to London.

“The whole point and theme of the choir performing was to celebrate former President Nelson Mandela’s legacy, his life and what he did for South Africa. The highlight was when the choir was invited to sing at the Royal Chelsea Hospital. They were the second choir to ever sing in the chapel for their Christmas celebration,” Gallagher said.

She added that this year they will start a new choir and will travel again to the United Kingdom in another two years’ time.
