Getting Joburg in shape

FAIRLAND – Wellness coach says a healthy lifestyle is key to leading a healthy life. Free boot-camp helps people adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Two local wellness coaches from Fairland make it their goal to get the people of Johannesburg in shape. They started a free boot-camp in order to do just that.

Howard Warner and Carina van Vuuren have 30 years combined experience as wellness coaches. Warner said that getting into shape is 80 per cent nutrition and 20 per cent exercise. “We run the Fairland Wellness Centre where we teach people about making healthy eating and lifestyle choices. We decided to start the boot-camp to help people get into shape,” explained Warner.

The boot-camp participants go to the Wellness Centre for a free body scan. Warner said that they measure muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, metabolic age and resting metabolic rate. According to the results, the wellness coaches will then advise people on healthy eating choices. “They then join the boot-camp. After 30 days we do another body scan so we can track their progress,” said Warner.

The exercises consist of warm-up stretching exercises and then light aerobic and cardiovascular exercises. Age does not matter as people of all ages and fitness levels attend the boot-camp. Warner said that they have participants from age eight to 65. “With today’s sedentary lifestyle, it is very important for people to make time to exercise,” added Warner.

The boot-camp is a free community project. Warner said that he and Van Vuuren love sharing their passion for wellness and hope that they can make a difference in people’s lives. “After one month of running the boot-camp, the results are very encouraging,” concluded Warner. Boot-camp takes place every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm and Saturdays at 7am. People who wish to join, can contact Warner.
