Pikitup does not always pick it up

ALBERTS FARM – Rubbish is illegally dumped in De La Rey Road in Alberts Farm.

Ward 86 Councillor Steve Kotzé is exasperated by Pikitup for not collecting rubbish on De La Rey Road in Alberts Farm.

Kotzé said that he had reported the matter to Pikitup a while ago when rubbish was illegally dumped at the side of the road.

“There was quite a lot of rubbish which included an old couch. I was quite concerned about the eyesore the rubbish caused as well as the attraction to vagrants,” Kotzé added.

He said that he was surprised when Pikitup only collected half of the rubbish which led to more rubbish being illegally dumped.

Pikitup spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said that the Waterval Depot responsible for this area had removed the rubbish which included a burnt couch. “Most of the illegal dumping in this area and surrounding areas are recurring and usually occur during the night. The depot cleans this and other areas as per its weekly illegal dumping schedule,” he said.

Mashapu appealed to residents not to litter or to dump illegally as this caused extra work for their depot and was generally an eyesore.

“Pikitup has a free bulk waste service which residents can take advantage of. Through this service we collect all types of waste which cannot fit into a 240 litre bin, except hazardous waste materials,” he pointed out .

He urged residents to report incidents of illegal dumping to the JMPD, so that the perpetrators could be fined and held responsible.
