A hijacking took place in Windsor East and the suspects are still at large.
The incident happened on 29 June at about 7pm when the driver of a vehicle stopped on Dukes Avenue to buy mielies from a hawker. When he returned to his car he was approached by three armed men who stole his silver Jetta 5 and drove towards Republic Road. Sergeant Orden Masumpa from the Linden Police said the eyewitnesses could not describe the suspects. “The victim was not harmed in the process,” he said. The police are still on the lookout for the three suspects and the vehicle and urge anyone with information to call its crime-stop number on 086 001 0111.
In addition, Masumpa said that for the past seven days there have been increases in hijackings, theft of wheels from vehicles, theft from motor vehicles and theft of gate motors, in the Windsor area. “People need to be more cautious even if they live in a complex; many thefts from motor vehicles have happened at complexes recently,” he said.
He urges drivers to have extra security measures fitted into their vehicles, such as tracking and anti-hijack devices. Masumpa said cars that are being targeted are, Volkswagen Polos, Fortuners and double cabs, as well as Toyota Yaris’.
He added that 33 illegal immigrants were arrested in Windsor East and West. “Police visibility is making an impact in Windsor,” he said. He concluded that there have been more arrests made and more bylaw enforcements were in place.
