A good eye for music

BERARIO–Talented optometrist finds the time to improve people's eyesight and entertain audiences with musical abilities.

Harry Tambourlas is a dedicated optometrist by day and a talented jazz musician by night.

He is a vocalist and plays the double bass in his spare time when he is not helping people improve their eyesight. His stage name is ‘Harry Talas’, since people struggle to pronounce his surname.

“My parents initially suggested I study optometry, however, I wanted to get into jazz. I perform at Calistos on the last Sunday of every month. I love both careers. Optometry is my way of making a living and jazz is my passion. I really enjoy my work and enjoy helping other people,” said Tambourlas.

The multi-talented musician also performs at weddings and birthdays when he is invited. He is inspired by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Micheal Bublé.

“Music is relaxing and gives you the opportunity to improvise. Optometry, on the other hand, requires me to be as accurate as possible. Initially, it was never meant to be a balance between the two, one of them was meant to keep my intellect intact. I find both professions very challenging but believe that music is very relaxing, and lets your soul open up to enjoy the moment.”

The father of three said that his family supports, respects and encourages his professions. His two children always come watch him perform and are proud of his passion, he said.
