Do your bit as a resident to prevent blockages of sewerage pipes

ALBERTS FARM – Ward 86 councillor, Philip Kruger talks about how sewerage pipes sometimes get blocked.

Sewage issues are not uncommon, however, residents can do their part to ensure blockages do not happen.

Ward 86 councillor, Philip Kruger explained that one of the most concerning problems in his ward is a constant sewerage pipe leak in Alberts Farm.

Sewage leaks on the grounds of the beautiful Alberts Farm.

He said in the open patch of land there are a few manholes situated next to each other.

“For some reason, these manholes keep overflowing with sewage and I have inquired with the relevant department to find out what the exact problem is,” Kruger said.

He explained that the manholes underlying the pipes are regularly unblocked.

“At this stage it is unsure whether the pipe infrastructure has failed or whether it is a question of blockages caused by residents,” said Kruger.

On the matter of blockages, he explained that every time he goes out to the site when the pipes are unblocked, various items that should not be found are washed up.

“We find all sorts of things from towels and nappies to pads and tampons which are things residents should not be flushing down the toilet.”

He said usually when a sewage issue affects a very small and specific area especially by one or two houses, it means that things are being flushed down drains that should not be.

He urged residents to use their refuse removal services when needing to dispose of items which should not to be flushed.

“These items cannot break up when going through the sewerage system.”

Kruger said Pikitup offers residents a limited amount of bulk removals each year and additional removals have to be organised beforehand.
