Ann Latsky Nursing College students are demanding a stipend

HURST HILL – Students say they are tired of being discriminated against.

The Ann Latsky Nursing College  in Hurst Hill is a hive of activity this evening, following a student protest, which began yesterday.

The college students are demanding a stipend and fair treatment from the Department of Health.

Mduduzi Ndlovu, Secretary General of the Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union, representing some of these students, cried foul saying these health students were being discriminated against.

“We are tired of the dirty politics, of tripartite alliance unions misrepresenting the citizens as well as employees when it comes to health matters,” said Ndlovu. “Since the colonial government, students were given a stipend, just as it still is in the military and police academies – all students are given money.”

Police have descended on the campus following rumours of a hostage situation. However, the Northcliff Melville Times has since established that all parents and students are gathered in one of the lecture halls voluntarily.

College officials are currently in negotiations with the students in the presence of police officers.

This is a developing story.

More details will be published as and when they become available.
