VIDEO: Woman shot in the head in Newlands still fighting for her life

NEWLANDS – Riëtte van der Merwe has a bullet lodged in the back of her head.

The 37-year-old woman who was shot twice in the head at Manny’s Meat Market in Newlands is fighting for her life at Millpark Hospital.

Riëtte van der Merwe, the supervisor at the market still has one bullet lodged in the back of her head.

She was shot during an armed robbery when about eight armed men entered the butchery.

Allegedly, the men demanded cash but did not want the money from the cash register instead insisted on going to the back of the shop where the safe was.

A scuffle broke out and the manager was hit with a firearm. He then ran outside and flagged down a taxi to take him to Sophiatown Police Station.

On the manager’s return with the police, he found the supervisor lying on the floor with two gunshot wounds to her head.

According to CCTV footage,  the suspects got distracted when Van Der Merwe fought back‚ but the suspects fired four shots before they fled.

Two shots hit Van Der Merwe and the two hit the fridge.
