Puppy love makes the world go round
NORTHCLIFF – A resident comes up with a novel way for others to help animals at the Randburg and Maraisburg SPCAs.
A local resident is feeding animals in the community and helping people go green at the same time.
Tracy Christie is on a mission to exchange garden seeds for pet food for Mandela Day. The name of her project is the 167 Cans Project. She started getting the word out via her Facebook page, Life with Sheldon & Mackey, who are her two rescue dogs.

The page primarily deals with animal welfare and she has posted a few pictures of their journey so far. The two rescue dogs were at a no-kill shelter and she adopted both of them as a bonded pair.
Christie put it out on Facebook that she would like to exchange the garden seeds she gets from people and a popular supermarket, for pet food. The response she received from the community has been immense and this encouraged her to do more and keep going.
“I am doing this on my own in the Northcliff and Fairland area. I am very happy that this is spreading and I hope that other people will jump on board,” said Christie.

“Instead of just asking for hand-outs, I wanted to offer people something for their donations and thought that I would use the little seeds to trade for pet food.”
Christie will be giving the food to the Randburg and Maraisburg SPCAs on 18 July.
“Because this has been so well received, I will be starting a new initiative called Trade U For Cans. I have friends who have donated items and services such as dog jerseys, manicures and distressed frames that I can use to barter for more pet food. The idea is not to deal with money but allow people to ‘pay’ with pet food,” said Christie.
For general donations, drop-off points are at Handy Hardware on Smit Street in Fairland and The Laser boutique at L’Corro Centre in Northcliff.
