MTN workers close off 14th Avenue during protest
FAIRLAND – Meet our demands, or else
Workers from the massive telecommunications company, gathered together to hand over a list of demands to their superiors.

MTN workers took to the streets on 13 July in a march to demand improved wages and revised benefits. The workers began trickling into the front of MTN’s head office from 7am on the day.
By mid-morning, there was a sizable group that had closed off one half of 14th Avenue.

Fairland police were at the demonstration to ensure that public order was maintained during the day.
Police ensured that traffic in the area continued to follow while MTN had organised additional private security to secure its premises as well as other workers.

Workers of MTN are demanding the company improves their wages and adds vital benefits to their packages.
Among the benefits they asked for, in their memorandum, was an improved medical aid policy and housing subsidies.
One marcher stated that this demonstration was the beginning of their negotiation process.
The individual who asked to remain anonymous said, “Once we hand over our list of demands, we will give MTN time to meet them and if they fail to do so we will gather once again for a full-on strike.”
The marchers remained peaceful throughout the day.
