A century milestone
WINDSOR WEST – She lets us in on her longevity secret and tells us about her century-long life.
Magie Loubser celebrated her 100th birthday on 25 October with family, friends and neighbours.
Magie was born in Parys, Free State in 1918 and moved to Johannesburg for work. She went on to spend 57 years of her life on Catherine Street in Fontainebleau. She humbly spoke about her younger days when she started working, “I came to Johannesburg when I was 19 years old and I worked at the bakery, grocery shop where they sold fish and lastly became a receptionist at the dentist for 40 years.”
Magie currently lives with her nurse Sheila Mvalo who she credits as ‘doing a sterling job’, at her home in Windsor West. They spend a lot of time walking and watching television together and have become best friends in their time together.
In her century of living, Magie has had three sons, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. One of her sons, Martin Loubser, said he makes sure he visits his mother every day. He shared some of the fond memories he has of growing up with his amazing mother. Martin said, “I remember my mother used to sing in the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra during her lunch break.”
Magie also said that on 2 November it would have been her 74th wedding anniversary. Her husband, unfortunately, passed away in 2005.
She shared her secrets to her long and fruitful life. “I exercise daily, Sheila and I walk about two hours a day and we also enjoy sitting on the benches by the dam in the complex.”
She was pleased with her family and friends celebrating her and she now waits for her 101st birthday.
