Illegal liquor establishments face the law

MELVILLE – Four shebeens were closed down and 290 beers were confiscated by police.


On 8 March, Brixton police along with the station’s Crime Prevention Unit, Metro police and various security companies participated in a joint operation.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff the mission of the operation was to enforce liquor by-laws and ensure liquor establishments are working within the rules of the law. Backhoff said, “The focus was on illegal liquor outlets in Melville, Vrededorp, Hursthill and Brixton. Four shebeens were closed down while a total of 290 beers were confiscated.”

The police were extremely pleased with the outcome of the operation. “The operation was a success and is a warning to all other illegal liquor outlets that the selling of liquor without the necessary licences or permits will not be tolerated.”

She added that a lot of assault and assault common cases reported at the station were the result of alcohol abuse.

This abuse also resulted in crime taking place in the precinct and that is why the police have prioritised the issue.
