Police have reminded the public that the Firearm Amnesty period will be ending soon.
Parkview Police station’s spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, stated that this period is for those looking for the chance to get rid of their firearms and ammunition. She explained, “The six month amnesty period will afford South Africans an opportunity to surrender illegal/unwanted firearms, ammunition and /or firearm parts to help clear illegal guns from the streets.”
The amnesty period started on 1 December 2019 and will be ending on 31 May 2020.
In order to assist the public with more information on the amnesty and what criteria has to be met for it to apply, Captain Sibeko shared the following:
Persons or institutions that meet the criteria below can apply for amnesty:
- Persons in possession of a firearm without a legitimate licence, permit or authorisation.

- Persons in possession of ammunition without a licenced firearm capable of discharging the ammunition or without a collector’s permit.
