Since schools and universities opened in January, Brixton Police have noted an increase in common robberies in the Brixton policing area.
Brixton police spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff said that students and learners can become easy targets due to the fact that they walk, openly displaying cell phones, tablets and laptops when in public.
“The station is pleading to parents, guardians and students to be more vigilant, pay attention to their surroundings, and walk in groups where possible,” said Backhoff.

She said that following safety tips will help reduce the chances of students becoming victims of crime:
- Walk in groups where possible
- Keep devices such as cell phones, tablets and laptops out of site
- Avoid wearing earphones while walking in the street
- Parents and guardians need to avoid giving children too much money for school
- Students are encouraged not to walk around with lots of money
- Do not walk in quiet streets, rather take a more busy street
- Parents and guardians are asked to encourage children and students to heed to the warnings of the police should they be found in public or a crime hot spot.
Backhoff continued, “The safety of all in the policing precinct of Brixton is a priority of the station and thus the stations asks everyone’s participation in this endeavour. There is no policing without community. Together crime can be combated, ensuring a safer tomorrow.”
