De La Salle Holy Cross College’s proud piper

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College expresses it's pride over it's young piping champion.

De La Salle Holy Cross College learner and bagpiper, Michael Storie won the Novice Juvenile March Competition in the Sandy Mallen Piping Solo Competition.

The Grade 7 learner attended the competition which was held at the Transvaal Scottish headquarters on 7 March. This specific competition was open to players up to the age of 19.

Michael started his pipe band journey in 2017. The school has a 40-year history of piping and Michael, who began playing in the competition pipe band in Grade 5, has gone from strength to strength with the help of some of South Africa’s top pipers who tutor the school band.

His love of music has been nurtured by the school’s commitment to the cultural development of its learners. Under the guidance of the school’s director of music, Naomi de Klerk, Michael also participates in the choir, the youth band and has been a keen participant in cultural and music evenings playing both his guitar and his bagpipes.

“The hours of practising and the great efforts of my tutors Mr Shepard and Mr Hogg have paid off,” he said. “It is wonderful to have so many people invested in my success. I love that music is so important to college life and that I get to enjoy it with my friends. My favourite [Scottish] gathering of the year is the De La Salle Holy Cross College Gathering but I enjoy all the gatherings throughout the year.”

The De La Salle Holy Cross College National Championship Highland Gathering will take place on 30 May. The band welcomes school-aged children from grades 4 to 12.
