Hawks arrest Northern Cape man for food parcel fraud

Communities advised to report any and all food parcel fraud to their nearest police station.

The Hawks swooped in on Thursday this week and arrested a 33-year-old man suspected of fraudulently diverting food parcels in the agricultural town of Jan Kempdorp in the Northern Cape.

According to a statement released by the government, the arrest came after two members of the community were reportedly made to sign for food parcels which they did not receive. Delivery was promised, but never eventuated.

The town is situated just under 100 km from the province’s capital, Kimberley.

The food parcels, meant for distribution to the poorest of the poor, were provided by the Department of Social Development and each contained R900 worth of groceries. The suspect was charged with fraud and is set to appear in the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court on 28 April.

The public is reminded to report any fraud or corruption to their nearest police station.
