Sunday 7 team going to the top

Cricket at Marks Park might have come to an abrupt halt just like all sports due to coronavirus pandemic, but there’s still many reasons to smile and be happy.

The Marks Park Cricket Club (MPCC) shared the most recent achievements of their Sunday 7 cricket team. “MPCC Sunday 7 team were undefeated for the season and won the League.

This team will be recognised at the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) Club awards which will be held later in the year,” read a statement from the club.

The Sunday 7 team has been viewed as one of the standout teams at the MPCC. The team is a ‘transition’ team where mainly junior players get the opportunity to play in a senior league. This league allows two over 18 players per team, and 35 overs are played on a Sunday.

With 15 teams in the league and 11 games played, the Sunday 7 team won all 11 of their games with 11 bonus points.

This is a remarkable achievement considering the average age of this team is 13-years-old.

The team, which is coached and managed by Ayub Sayed and Ketan Jeevan, had some stellar performances on the field. Parental and spectator support were also key to their success.

Standout players from the team include wicket keeper, Zain Jansen, who took 13 catches and stumping’s from nine matches. Yahya Bhabha knocked out 28 wickets in the 10 matches he played and Captain Zayd Whyte lead from the front with the bat, scoring 571 runs from 9 innings.

This included 2 hundred’s and 3 fifties, allowing him to finish the season with a strike rate of 108.14 and an average of 71.38.
