#KleenaJoburgReloaded to bring 35 000 bins to Ivory Park

JOBURG – Pikitup has cleared 4 649 illegal dumping spots at a cost of millions of rands and at the expense of efficient service delivery.

The City delivers 35-litre bins to Ivory Park residents as part of their #KleenaJoburgReloaded campaign.

The City of Johannesburg continued its #KleenaJoburg campaign in Ivory Park recently when they distributed bins, helped pick up litter, cut grass, clear illegal dumping sites, provide infrastructure maintenance, cutting and pruning of trees and by-law enforcement.
Having started in 2019 the campaign was renamed to #KleenaJoburgReloaded and on the day Environment and Infrastructure Services MMC Mpho Moerane, Pikitup chief operations officer Chris Dyani and Speaker of City Nonceba Molwele were present to ensure service delivery issues were being dealt with.

As part of the campaign, MMC Moerane announced the start of the 240-litre bins roll-out project in Ivory Park. These will replace the old 85-litre bins, which she said hampered efficient service delivery. Pikitup has undertaken to distribute about 35 000 bins in the area. Moerane said, “We appeal to residents to use the bins for waste disposal purposes only, we cannot ensure the cleanliness of the City without your contribution both through adopting responsible waste management practices and by also changing behaviour in the manner in which we treat waste.”

According to the City, Pikitup has cleared 4 649 illegal dumping spots at a cost of millions of rands and at the expense of efficient service delivery. A total of 1 060 illegal dumping spots were found in Ivory Park and surrounding areas. The MMC called for residents to participate in environmentally-friendly and resource-saving habits such as separation at source and recycling.

With landfill sites quickly running out of space, the consequences of not extending the lifespan of these sites would be disastrous. She explained, “Failure to adopt and participate in recycling efforts will have devastating consequences on our environment as evidenced by phenomena such as global warming. It will also have adverse effects on our financial well-being.”
