Man sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by Brixton Regional Court

BRIXTON – The accused is said to have pointed a gun at his three victims and stole goods in the victims' home.

The Brixton Regional Court, on 20 April, sentenced a 30-year-old male to 15 years’ imprisonment for house robbery.

The accused, with two of his accomplices, robbed a house in Mayfair on 13 May 2020. A 55-year-old father was inside the house with two of his children – a 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old boy. In a media statement, Captain Xoli Mbele explained, “The victims heard a knock on the door and when one of the children stood up to open the door, the accused pushed the door, pointed a firearm at them and hit the father with the butt of a firearm and forced the victims to lie down on the floor.
“The accused was once hired to fix electricity in the house. They ransacked the house and took three cell phones, a laptop and R1 000 cash.” Mbele added that the robbers then locked the victims inside the toilet before fleeing the scene.

“The accused was traced and apprehended on 15 May 2020 at Noord Taxi Rank.”

Mbele concluded that the good conviction is the result of diligent work done by the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Kgomo of Johannesburg Central Trio detectives. The investigating officer is commended for leading a quality investigation that resulted in the guilty verdict. “We hope this sentence will scare away would-be offenders from committing the same crime.”
