Scouts take over parks and trails
JOBURG – Scouts host their first regional face to face event since the start of the pandemic.

Scouts are out in their numbers for their 2021 Kim Shield.
The 2021 Kim Shield had boys and girls from across various Scouts group in Gauteng take each other on in the ultimate test of teamwork, problem-solving and discipline.

On September 11, the annual Scout hiking competition run was hosted through the parks and trails of Johannesburg with plenty of obstacles, challenges and quizzes at bases stationed across their route for the day for the grand prize of the Kim Shield.

Cubs and Scouts of the land, sea and air were expected to complete as many bases as possible to earn points with the Scouts walking through the green spaces around Delta Park. Points would be given based on how well the Scouts worked together, how quickly they completed their tasks and the strategies they would use.

Not only was this year’s event the 25th year it was run, it was also the first face-to-face regional event hosted by the Scouts since the Covid-19 pandemic started. In previous years, Kim Shield was hosted by the Scouts group premises over a weekend but this year was different – in a great way – allowing them to engage with Cubs, Scouts and patrol leaders from the province.

With Scout groups coming from the areas including Alexandra, Randpark Ridge, Vosloorus, Bryanston, Witpoortjie, Boksburg, Halfway House and many others, the day was jam-packed with excitement, fun and edutainment for all that participated.
