Lights, camera, action! Lyndan Meyers is on stage

Find out why this teen loves the performing as much as he does.

Some skills we acquire through time, but sometimes, our skill is a talent brewing within and, if you are lucky, you recognise it quickly with the aim to perfect it.

Take Lyndan Meyers for example – this talented young actor has been nurturing his talent of performance for years. Here is his account of his love for the performing arts.

Acting crossed my path unexpectedly.

I auditioned for my first role and landed it, then rehearsals exposed a new world, one where the interest of storytelling and portraying different characters was enticing and lots of learning happened.

Being on stage brings me relief from reality and authenticity comes to the fore like I never imagined. On stage I remain honest and true to the character I portray and during the storytelling I move away from who I am and enjoy taking the audience on the storytelling journey. For 90 minutes I forget about personal challenges, or peer pressures we as youth face every day. I find performing to be therapeutic as it frees my mind and gives me this thrill!

While on stage I can improvise, something youth can find difficult, acting makes that possible for me. I rehearse the lines, however, when on stage I just act and that brings a certain element of freedom of thinking, and improvisation, I climb into the character without losing myself though. I become this different ‘person’ which is liberating. I love acting because it tells stories in various ways. It can bring laughter, joy and comedy. It can tell a story about love and compassion. These are all the ‘feelings’ we as youth desperately need today.

I make the scene as relatable as possible to the audience because they might possibly experience same. I try and get them invested in the story, so they feel they’re in it and I also get to experiment with different props on stage. The best part is, I never stop learning new things on stage. The singing and dancing give me the opportunity to express my emotion from whatever is going on in my private life and incorporate it with the story.

Performing gave me a different perspective on things. I love acting, the plan is to do my best every time as the memories are priceless. I plan to continue acting and continue working hard living the words of Maya Angelou who said, ‘Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better’ as she also said, ‘My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive, and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style’.
