Ruth First remembered at moving ceremony at Westpark Cemetery 40 years after she was assassinated

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation hosted a commemorative event and memorial stone-laying ceremony to mark the anniversary.

On August 17, Ruth First was assassinated in Maputo following orders from Craig Williamson. She died after receiving a letter bomb while living in exile.

Guests at the commemorative event at Westpark Cemetery in honour of Ruth First, 40 years after her assassination.

A large group of friends, trade unionist and civil society came together to lay a memorial stone to honour a lifetime of activism as a struggle stalwart scholar and journalist.

The granite stone is placed in memory of Comrade Ruth First.
The Ahmed Kathrada Site of Memory at Westpark Cemetery, the perimeters of which are the exact dimensions of a Robben Island cell.

Pupils from Jeppe High School for Girls, who are beneficiaries of the Ruth First Scholarship, were also present.
