A look back at 2022 at De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior High School

The school's head looks back at the many success the year 2022 brought with it.

The head of De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior High School, Colette Marx shares her reflections on 2022.

In 2022, the college was abuzz with many wonderful learning opportunities for our junior high learners, from going on camps, visiting the theatre, sports tours, cheerleading, Junior City Council, Aladdin (our major production in 2022) and much, much more.

These opportunities allowed learners to achieve a multitude of skill sets. These skill sets included the ability to understand and manage their emotions, explore new areas of interest and understand the bigger impact of their contribution. Many of our accomplishments in 2022 can proudly be attributed to our Wellness Centre, dedicated teachers and supportive parents.

Our highly trained Wellness Team was readily available, not only for any learner to walk in and discuss whatever hardships they’re facing, but also to our wider community. The Wellness Team has overseen the creation of the Social and Emotional Learning curriculum, continued staff development and regular meetings to ensure that the aims are being achieved.

Subject specialists were employed to ensure ongoing specialised academic support and learners benefitted from the early detection of areas of need and individual learning plans.

Life skills that aren’t taught in a classroom were another area of focus. These #Mindshift sessions took place on Friday mornings and were led by various staff members who wanted to impart the life skills of their choice. Some of the activities included how to change a tyre, flower arrangements, social media etiquette and financial literacy.

The introduction of Creative Arts in the Junior High phase allowed pupils to obtain skills which can be applied across the curriculum and also to explore and enjoy a very different learning environment.

We aimed to raise a well-rounded, well-adjusted, socially mature and emotionally robust pupil. I believe through these creative interventions and activities, we achieved that.
