Softtown Runners take to the Sophiatown streets

This is running that aims to make its community healthy.

Running to take over the streets of Sophiatown in the healthiest way possible is the newly started club, the Softtown Runners. The club was recently established by local resident Catherine Marumo who strongly advocates for a healthier, stronger community.

The need for the club came after the realisation of two things – the importance of her own health, having recovered from her own health battles, and consciously making better holistic choices towards it. The other came through her son, as through him, she noted the importance of children having activities that keep them busy. “There is a lot of drugs in the community and children can easily become involved.”

Softtown Runners take part in activities such as aerobics, yoga, running and walks.

So far the club is in its humble beginnings, with a few runners from the community as members. Marumo said the people have generally taken to the initiative with great helpfulness and through their participation she has noted there is indeed a great need for this club. Her ultimate goal is to help people take care of their health and well-being through activities such as aerobics, boxing, tennis, yoga, walks and, of course, runs.

The Softtown Runners are a newly established fitness group in Sophiatown.

Building good habits within the youth is paramount to her. “I want to help the youth – especially those who are on drugs to recover, build their talent, go to school and help young ones with sports,” added Marumo.
The sports enthusiast looks forward to working with those in her community to make a success of this initiative.
