Why Devana Vavu came out of the woodworks
Local carpenter tells us why he goes against the grain.
Arriving in South Africa with just his heart of oak 18 years ago, Democratic Republic of Congo born Devana Vavu, had the belief that it would be in this country that he would carve out a life for himself.
As a 13-year-old boy, he could often be found in the backyard where he would look with both wonder and intrigue at the carpenter who worked there, as he created pieces by just putting wood together.

Vavu can be found at Northcliff-based Tshepo Community Development Initiative which now looks to impart the skills of woodwork to those wanting to enrich their lives for the better. “I have my skills, and I am willing to help others too. I have managed to gain so many invaluable riches from this country.” Being so competent in what he not only loves to do but is passionate about; he knows the value behind having a skill.
It is because of this that he is a strong advocate for people to learn a skill, especially the youth. As he sees it, it is important to impart mastery to the younger generation as it will be something they can use for life.

On the day the paper visited him, Vavu was constructing a box that would be used as a storage container for stock. He prides himself on being able to make almost anything he puts his mind to through the use of wood.
Even with the little he has– Vavu proves so much can still be done. So, he aims to show others that nothing can splinter your life when you have something no one can ever take away from you.
