How to be safely use fireworks this festive season

The JMPD shares some guidelines on the use of fireworks and keeping the animals safe this festive season

Fireworks are used in every festive season to celebrate Christmas and the start of the New Year, but this needs to be done cautiously while protecting domestic animals and other residents as it can be harmful.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla explained that during the holiday season, officers of the JMPD will be on the lookout for anyone violating the by-laws regulating the use of fireworks.

“Fireworks present a risk since they might burst into dangerously different directions, hitting individuals or starting home fires. When utilising fireworks, the general public must be aware that there are laws and guidelines they must follow.”

He shared days and times to use fireworks during the festive season:

  • During the festive season, fireworks may only be used on Christmas Eve (from 19:00 to 22:00)
  • Day of Goodwill (from 19:00 to 22:00)
  • New Year’s Eve (from 23:00 to 1:00)
  • New Year’s Day (from 19:00 to 22:00)

The JMPD is pleading with revellers to use fireworks sensibly and to always consider the security of children and pets. “We are advising them never to throw lighted crackers at their pets and to keep them indoors when using fireworks.”
