Greenkeepers tournament finds its winner

The tournament took place for the first time at Linden Bowling Club.

Victor Hadebe took top prize at the recent first annual Greenkeepers Tournament held at Linden Bowling Club. The event was organised by the Madalas Bowling Association.

The tournament was run over two Mondays and had R8000 prize money. Twenty-four greenkeepers, mainly from Joburg and West-Rand Clubs took part. Along with various prizes won by the end of the event, each player was also given a branded hat, on which the tournament name and date was embroidered. Its winner, Hadebe, of Wanderers Bowling Club, came out on top in closely contested final between Florida North Bowling Club greenkeeper, Forget Munyai.

The Madalas Bowling Association is an independent group of bowlers who have formed a ‘virtual lawn bowling club’ for the purpose of keeping those interested in the sport, active participants. It has been in existence for just over eight years and has grown to have 200 members. Competitions are played during the year, with participants playing with whomever they choose, irrespective of the club to which they belong, with the playing sessions being on a Thursday.

Through its years, the association has been able to make substantial payments to clubs which have hosted competitions, from the green fees it has raised from playing sessions. Being a non-profit association, and with funds available, the committee decided to run a green-keepers competition to reward the individuals who look after the bowling greens on which all bowlers enjoy many hours of companionship.

They thanked all those who supported the event, and are convinced, that through its success, this will become an annual event.
