Dabs keeps their side of the earth clean

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club paddlers ditched their paddles and picked up rubbish bags instead as they cleaned up parts of Emmarentia.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club (Dabs) paddlers worked to ensure their side of the Earth was clean when they took part in the Fresh Earth Dabulamanzi Dam Clean-Up.

Organised by Fresh Earth, the clean-up takes place every six months and has the young paddlers of Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (Scarc) join in on the clean-up too. Spearheading the initiative was canoeist Elandrie Zietsman who said this was an important event to host, as for them, every little bit they can do for the environment goes a long way. It also fills everyone with pride to keep their space clean.

Rubbish collected from surrounds of the canoe club, the dam and the bridge, saw a collection of 100 bags of waste. Zietsman shared it was important for her to help lead this clean-up. “We need to be role models to our children and if we don’t look after the Earth now what will we leave them for their future?” A sentiment that echoes through the relationship Dabs has with Scarc, as they see themselves as family.

Another reason the clean-up was so important to those involved was that it also went a long way in benefiting the animals found in the environment. From seeing them get their hands dirty, Zietsman hopes it encourages the greater community to be motivated to also help look after the Earth.
