Matthew Hunt (16) is taking the sports world by storm. Northcliff High School’s Matthew Hunt is a 16-year old athlete who has already made a name for himself in the world of sports. With his impressive achievements across multiple sporting codes, Matthew represents the epitome of dedication, hard work, and determination. But it is not just his sporting prowess that sets him apart, it is also his humble attitude and desire to make a positive impact on others.

From a young age, Matthew has been drawn to the world of sports. He possesses a natural passion for trying out new sports, making new friends, and pushing his limits. What started as a childhood fascination with physical activities soon blossomed into a deep love for competition and the discipline required to excel.

One of Matthew’s sporting idols is Dan Carter, a renowned rugby player. Carter’s commitment to hard work, humility and gratitude resonates deeply with Matthew. Inspired by Carter’s journey to becoming the best in the world, Matthew has set his sights on achieving similar success through dedication and perseverance.

Matthew has participated in various competitions on both local and international levels, showcasing his versatility and skill across numerous sporting codes – from swimming, athletics, modern pentathlon and judo. Matthew has consistently excelled and earned recognition for his achievement.

Some of the highlights in Matthew’s sporting career include winning the South African Championships in Modern Pentathlon, clinching a gold medal in the cadets division at the Commonwealth Judo Championships, and representing South Africa at the World Biathle and Triathle Championships with top 10 finishes.

However, Matthew’s journey has not been without its fair share of setbacks and obstacles. From unexpected injuries to the disappointment of not always achieving desired levels of success. He has faced challenges head-on. “These setbacks have only served to fuel my motivation to improve and strive for greater accomplishments.”

Looking ahead, Matthew envisions a future where he continues to pursue his passion for sports. In five years’ time, he hopes to play professional rugby, ideally for the Lions franchise. Additionally, he aspires to participate in the Olympic Games, either in judo or modern pentathlon, if the opportunities present themselves. Matthew also dreams of giving back to the sports community by coaching young athletes, sharing his knowledge an experiences.

Sport has played a significant role in shaping Matthew’s identity and character. It has taught him valuable life lessons, including how to handle success and failure, navigate difficult situations, and maintain a humble attitude. He attributes much of his success to the incredible coaches and teachers who have invested their time and expertise in him, and he strives to repay their faith through his dedication and work ethic.

When asked about his advice to young athletes, Matthew emphasises the importance of hard work, consistency, and humility. “I encourage aspiring athletes to embrace the learning process, remain teachable, and maintain high standards for themselves.”

Matthew Hunt is not just an athlete with impressive accomplishments, he is a role model, a representative of dedication and perseverance, and someone who aspires to make a difference in the world of sports. With his talent, work ethic, and humble attitude, he is undoubtedly a rising star to watch out for.

Matthew recently represented his club at the South African Kurash Championships that were held on the May 18. Kurash is a mixed martial arts combat sport. He won gold fighting in the U20 age group in the under-18kg weight category. He has now been selected to represent South Africa at the African Kurash Championships taking place at the end of July.
