Building a better Emmarentia

Emmarentia residents gathered in numbers to voice their concerns and propose community initiatives at the recent Annual General Meeting.

On October 9, residents of Emmarentia gathered for the Emmarentia Residents Association’s (ERA) AGM, where they had the opportunity to express their views on community issues and future projects.

Facilitated by resident Christa Swart, the meeting encouraged attendees to introduce themselves and share their reasons for moving to the suburb. Common themes included the area’s abundance of green space, quality schools, and peaceful environment.

Several community improvement projects were discussed and residents proposed initiatives such as repairing pavements, renaming streets, and implementing an ‘events tax’ on companies hosting events in the suburb.

The revenue generated from this tax would be redirected towards projects benefitting the entire community.

Dr Ferrial Adams, a resident and representative from WaterCAN, highlighted the ongoing water crisis affecting not only Emmarentia but the entire country.

She noted that more than 60% of rivers were contaminated, and in Johannesburg, 46% of water was lost due to leaks or unbilled usage. Despite these challenges, she urged residents to continue conserving water and to spread awareness about the issue.

Gemey Abrahams, who oversees ERA’s building and planning portfolio, remarked on the optimism present at the meeting, despite the challenges facing the city. Abrahams said the association was committed to uniting residents through projects that enhanced the community.

The ERA emphasised the importance of reporting infrastructure issues such as water leaks, power outages, and sewage problems to the relevant authorities. They have collaborated with local councillor Nicolene Jonker to escalate these issues for resolution and have supported residents in protesting against prolonged water outages.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, the association has taken proactive steps including considering legal accountability measures to prevent isolated incidents of water and electricity failures.

The ERA’s efforts reflect a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Emmarentia, fostering community spirit, and addressing pressing local issues.
