McDonald’s South Africa, along with Ronald McDonald House Charities, unit to support families on World Children’s Day

Coming together on World Children's Day, McDonald's South Africa alongside Ronald McDonald House Charities, reaffirmed their support to the well-being of sick children, and their dedication to aiding children's welfare, and advocating for their rights.

On November 20, McDonald’s South Africa, in collaboration with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), celebrated World Children’s Day by reaffirming its dedication to supporting children’s health and well-being. This global event emphasised the importance of advocating for children’s rights and creating a brighter future for the next generation.

A meaningful partnership

Salome Parkies, matron of Marang House, a non-profit organisation that provides a nurturing home environment for children between the ages of 4 and 14, empowering them to learn and manage their illness, expressed heartfelt gratitude for McDonald’s support, stating: “McDonald’s has been looking after us. Without them, we would not have a bus. They have done a lot for us. We go far with this relationship, as they have funded us for 20 years.” This sentiment reflects the significant impact McDonald’s has had on local communities through its charitable initiatives.

The R10 Hand Campaign

This year’s celebration highlighted the transformative R10 Hand Campaign, which empowers McDonald’s customers to contribute by purchasing hand-shaped stickers for just R10. Every sticker sold directly supports their mission to provide a ‘home away from home’ for families with children undergoing medical treatment.

The funds raised through the R10 Hand Campaign have enabled RMHC to provide essential services, including free accommodation, meals, and transportation for families during their children’s hospital stays. Nicholas Marcel, acting CEO of McDonald’s South Africa, stated the importance of this initiative, saying: “World Children’s Day reminds us of the critical role we play in ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Every sticker purchased represents a step toward providing comfort, care, and hope to families in need.”

Heartwarming stories of impact

The impact of RMHC’s work is best illustrated through the stories of the families it serves. Many families who have stayed at Ronald McDonald Houses across South Africa share touching accounts of how the charity has supported them during their medical journeys, highlighting the emotional and practical relief it provides, said Marcel.

Looking ahead

As RMHC continues to expand its reach, McDonald’s South Africa is committed to ensuring the charity has the necessary resources to enhance its services. Plans include building new facilities, improving existing programmes, and increasing public awareness of RMHC’s mission.
McDonald’s South Africa invites everyone to join the movement. By purchasing a R10 hand sticker at participating McDonald’s restaurants, South Africans can contribute to creating meaningful change for children and families in need. Sechaba Motsieloa, the marketing director at McDonald’s South Africa, remarked: “Every small act of kindness counts in the lives of these children and families.”
