VOX POP: How is the water crisis affecting our community’s daily life?

Johannesburg's water woes have sparked widespread protests, as residents in suburbs like Westdene and Emmarentia take to the streets to demand solutions to the persistent shortages. How are the residents affected?

The water crisis in Johannesburg shows no signs of calming down. From burning tyres to blocking roads, the protests have disrupted daily life, underscoring the desperation of communities left without a reliable supply of this essential resource.

The Northcliff Melville Times went into the field to hear the residents’ side over the ongoing water crisis. Let’s hear what they have to say?

Edmund Bailey: We have to get up very early to even bath. It is extremely difficult for my wife and daughter to do washing. The school gets disrupted because of no water in their taps, then the pupils get sent home.
Emil Faber: I am a business owner that cannot function at this stage, as I am losing customers due to lack of water. We suffer constantly with dry taps. It has been an ongoing problem over the last couple of years. At the moment, just to function, we have to run around with buckets to fill water, and it is impossible to make a living.
Bernadette Benson: They cut off the water for more than 12 hours. It is unhygienic to not have water to even wash or drink. Because of the unemployment rate, where are we supposed to get money to buy water? It is not fair.
Patrick Bond: All of us are in the same boat, and its sinking. There is no water. The residents of Westbury, Coronationville, and Melville are without water for weeks. We need to come out with more direct action and pressure on the Johannesburg council and officials.
