Dabs hosts first races for 2025

Recently, Dabulamanzi Canoe Club hosted it's first races of the year, as paddlers took on the red, pink, yellow, and green, for the kiddies, races.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club (Dabs) recently hosted it first canoeing races of the 2025 season.

The race featured various options for entry that accommodated the fit and strong training towards upcoming races as well as those who just want to get fit again, to be able to enjoy the marathon or sprint races being scheduled for the next few months.

Race options were: the red race: an 8km paddle, 3km portage, and another 7km paddle, the pink race: an 8km paddle and 3km run, with no portage of boat, just a walk or run for fitness, and the yellow race: an 8km paddle with no portage. The green race, for Guppies from ages five or six years to 12, just to enjoy themselves, was a 4km paddle.

In the main red race, Siseko Ntondini, one of the first Sowetans to ever do the Dusi, finished first in a time of 01:32:00. She was followed by Dabs very own Rob Crichton three minutes later and Michael John Robb just one second behind him. It was a tight and enjoyable training opportunity for all who will use this race as preparation for the Dusi Marathon taking place in February.

A number of the club’s experienced paddlers opted for the pink race option, with no boat to be carried on the portage ā€“ just a run. Top finisher was Wayne Jacobs in 01:30:00, followed by Mark Garden and Keith Flemmer in 01:34:00 and 01:44:00 respectively. Kirsty Pott and Renschi van Zyl were the first lady finishers in 01:53:00 and 01:57:00 respectively.

The yellow race finishers were led by Kyle Armdorf, a junior, in 00:43:00, and the first lady finishers were Pippa Martin, in 00:51:59, and Cathleen van Eeden ,finishing in 00:57:12, with many others participating in this event.

Rio Hao was the first finisher in the green race, in 00:26:00, followed by Ruwan Jayakody, in 00:29:00. Caylen Armdorf finished fourth, and Aaywan Judy fifth. Caylen was the first girl to finish in a time of 00:30:39.
